Charlie
Whiting is the Formula One Race Director, Safety Delegate, Permanent Starter and
head of the F1 Technical Department. He manages the logistics of each grand
prix, inspects the cars in Parc Fermé, enforces the rules of the FIA and
controls the starting lights.
In 1977 he joined Hesketh Racing as an engineer, and joined Brabham when Hesketh
collapsed, where he remained for a decade, under the guidance of Bernie
Ecclestone.
When Ecclestone rose to power in 1988, Whiting became Technical Delegate of F1,
and in 1997 was made FIA Race Director and Safety Delegate.
It was Whiting, who caused controversy at the 2005 Indianapolis Grand Prix, when
he refused to implement a chicane at the banked turn 13, where Michelin had been
experiencing tyre issues. He was supported by legal advice that said to make a
last-minute change to the circuit without going through the normal inspection
and validation procedures would expose all concerned to extreme legal sanctions
in the event of an accident.
