Suzuka is one of the most
challenging circuit on the calendar. It is the only figure of eight used in
Formula One, therefore providing both anti-clockwise and clockwise circuit
layouts. Getting a good set up here is difficult as you need to find a balance
between aerodynamic downforce and mechanical grip.
The track is bumpy in places,
especially through the notorious 130R, where Allan McNish was caught out in 2002
qualifying.
The Spoon curve at the far end of
the circuit is another challenging turn while the double apex first turn is
difficult to master.
Drivers normally opt for soft to
medium suspension settings and a medium level of downforce.
The 2005 race was one of the most dramatic in recent years, with Kimi Raikkonen
hunting down Giancarlo Fisichella for the lead, overtaking on the very last lap
to claim victory. Meanwhile Fernando Alonso daringly passed Michael Schumacher
around the outside of the daunting 130R corner, and then passed Mark Webber with
2 wheels on the grass going down the main straight.
The 2006 event will be a thriller if it even comes close to last year's events.
