The first Malaysian Grand Prix was held in 1999, at the Sepang circuit near Kuala Lumpur. The track designed by guru Hermann Tilke was an immediate favourite among drivers and teams, with a great variety of high and low speed corners. Temperatures and humidity levels in Malaysia are grueling, and many drivers can lose up to two litres of fluid during the race.

The tight first two corners always pose difficulties at the beginning of the race, and overtaking is relatively easy compared to other circuits. Last year saw a thrilling fight between Ralf Schumacher, Mark Webber and Nick Heidfeld, while Webber and Giancarlo Fisichella saw their races end after a collision.

Rain is always a threat, as was proved in 2001, when a monsoon soaked the track within seconds, sending cars aquaplaning.

Now a recognised feature of the F1 Calendar, Malaysia always provides and interesting race.
