Nurburgring is a name etched into motorsport
history, but it is not the present version of the track that is mentioned with
such esteem. The old Nurburgring was a 13 mile classic, with over 100 corners,
rapid changes in elevation and was quite literally the ultimate driving
challenge. The old Nurburgring is still open for road cars to travel round, and
claims lives every year, yet a Grand Prix car hasn't laid rubber here for over
30 years.
The new Nurburgring used today was
first used for Grand Prix racing in 1984 when Alain Prost won the European Grand
Prix. The circuit then hosted the German Grand Prix in 1985, but F1 did not
return back here until 1995.
1999 saw the Stewart of Johnny
Herbert win a thrilling wet/dry race for the Stewart team, a surprise victory
after many of the leading cars had suffered problems.
The first sector of the track was
extensively modified for 2002, and saw the infamous first corner chopped.
Instead there was new complex at the start with an hairpin leading into a left
hander and then a slow right hander adding about 15 seconds onto the lap time.
The track requires a medium level
of downforce, with a mix of slow and fast corners. The longer corners lead to
understeer problems but drivers are still able to attack the tight final
chicane. Always expect rain here, its location in the Eiffel mountains often
leads to rapid changes in the weather.
2005 provided drama, with Kimi Raikkonen's suspension failure on the last lap
handing victory to Fernando Alonso.
