Monza is one of the classic
Formula One circuits. It is the fastest on the circuit, and up to 2005 you could
expect to do a lap with an average speed of around 160 mph.
Famed for its older oval circuit,
which is no longer used, Monza is still a high speed dash, although chicanes
have made the circuit slower. The first chicane was modified in 2000 and is now
much tighter.
The circuit requires almost
minimum downforce, as top speed is the main priority. A stiff front end of the
car makes up for the grip lost in the low speed chicanes.
Parabolica is one of the more
famous turns in Formula One, and is a challenge. Entered at around 140, dropping
to 100 at the apex, it is up to the driver to apply speed at the correct point
to secure a good lap time.
The Italian Grand Prix has been
staged here every year but one since 1950, and is one of the most historic
tracks on the championship calendar.
