Monaco is perhaps the most famous
Grand Prix in the world. Situated among the streets of the millionaires paradise
of Monte Carlo, the circuit is the narrowest in Formula One. Lined with Armco
barriers, one wrong move and you're out of the race.
Overtaking is almost impossible,
and therefore qualifying and race strategy play an important role.
During the race, a driver can
expect to make around 2800 gear changes. Engines do not suffer much here, as the
speeds are constantly low, although the amount of work for the driver is mid
boggling.
A good set up here is essential,
with a high level of downforce required to maintain good grip through the
corners. High speeds are obtained through the tunnel, and the run up to Casino
Square, everywhere else is tight and twisty.
Strictly speaking the track is not
suited to Formula One, yet the teams return year after year, simply because of
the spectacle, the glamour, the history and the fact that the sponsors simply
love it.
Recent years have seen
modifications to the circuit. La Rascasse has been opened slightly and made
wider, whilst land has been re-claimed from the sea to build better pits
facilities and grandstands. A classic grand prix every year and 2005 even
provided some overtaking!
