In 1976, David Purley hired BRM designer Mike Pilbeam to design an F1 car for 1977, to be run under the Lec name (Lec being the name of the Purley family's refrigeration business).

The chassis made its debut at the Race of Champions where Purley finished a commendable sixth. He was unable to qualify at Spain, and during qualification for the British Grand Prix crashed violently with a stuck open throttle, leaving Purley severely injured. It would mark both the team's and Purley's final appearance at a proper F1 race.

The team designed another car for the 1979 season while Purley slowly recovered. It was raced on numerous occasions in the Aurora F1 series, but Purley later announced his retirement from racing.

The Lec team had only competed in ten races.

The team closed, and Purley moved on to acrobatic flying, but was killed in an accident off the south coast of England in 1985.
