DAVID COULTHARD-ADELAIDE
1995

One of the most embarassing pit stop pandemonium's
on this site. David Coulthard was leading the 1995 Australian Grand Prix,
heading for a win to end his relationship with the Williams team perfectly.
Coulthard entered the pits on lap 20 for his first tyre and fuel stop. However
it appeared he was traveling too quickly, for as he braked hard to turn the
sharp turn at the pit entrance, he slid wide and hit the pit wall, destroying
his front wing and left front suspension.
Coulthard, rather sheepishly edged out of the car and walked back to his garage.
He claimed the 'idle strategy' of the car drove him forwards into the wall: "I
slowed for the pits sufficiently but when I came down into second gear the low
idle strategy of the engine suddenly picked up and drove me forward."
The incident, unsurprisingly provided much
amusement up and down the pit lane, and Coulthard must have been kicking himself
that night, having thrown away a probable victory.
