rollover ff1 template   How not to exit the pit lane!

Gerhard Berger had made a pit stop to replace tyres on lap 35. He pulled out the pits, at high speed, but with cold tyres. When F1 tyres are cold, the ride height is reduced making the car more sensitive to bumps, and also effecting tyre grip, as warmer tyres are gar grippier.

As he went over a bump in the pit lane, the car bottomed out, cutting off downforce and lost grip, with the car veering to the left, spearing across the pit straight in front of Derek Warwick's Footwork, before slamming into the Armco barrier on the pit straight.

This was one of the events that led to speeds in pit lanes being limited.

The events of Estoril 1993 are shown below:

The car slides to the left, as another car goes past-lucky.
The car continues to veer to the left, while Berger applies full steering lock to the right.
Steering fully to the right doesn't help as the car edges closer to the barrier.

Bang-The car hits the barrier, having avoided being T-Boned by Derek Warwick's Footwork.

The car, now badly damaged runs down the barrier-out the race.
The dust cloud fades, allowing Berger to contemplate just how lucky he was!
