1961 DUTCH GRAND PRIX

The 1961 Dutch Grand Prix holds a very special
place in Formula One history, and not just because it was held on a Monday. This
Grand Prix is noted as being the most reliable ever, as there were no
retirements, and no pit stops were made throughout the entire duration of the
race.
Such high levels of reliability were not seen again until the 2005 Italian Grand
Prix where all 20 starters finished, although pit stops were made.
Ferrari held the fist row of the grid in qualifying with Phil Hill on pole, with
Wolfgang Von Trips second and Ritchie Ginther third. Stirling Moss's 'Walker'
Lotus and Graham Hill's BRM were on the second row.
Von Trips led from the start and the two Hill's behind him. However Graham was
passed by both Phil Hill and Jim Clark in quick succession. Clark then began a
tussle with Phil Hill, swapping positions several times before Hill edged ahead.
Ginther had led the majority of the race, but went wide on the last lap with an
open throttle. Von Trips won the race from Phil Hill and Jim Clark, with the
last placed runner, Hans Herrmann finishing in 15th, 3 laps behind Von Trips.
