This
pit stop was yet another reminder of the dangers of refuelling in Formula One.
On the 29th lap Minardi driver Gianmaria Bruni came into the pits for his stop.
While the pit stop went well, the fuel hose had leaked once it had been
disconnected from the car. Fuel leaked onto the ground, run under the car and
ignited. The car was engulfed in flamed briefly, before the Minardi crew
impressively doused the flames. Nobody was hurt, and while the car was fit to
continue, Bruni was not, for he had inhaled some of the fumes from the fire extinguishers,
and was having difficulty breathing. The Italian hopped out the car in search of
medial assistance, while the car was reluctantly retired.
